When I was in high school, I felt like an outsider at times. Many of my friends had money and I didn't. My senior year I couldn't go to the class trip. Most of my friends had access to cars. We didn't even own a car. I decided that I would be the funny person. I made people laugh, so then I didn't feel so much like an outsider. Lots of folks wanted to be my friend because I was so "nutty".
I am glad to be back in school. The Christmas break was stressful. I had to care for mom which was trying. I did get a chance to see my great niece and great nephews. They enjoyed the presents I have them. I went to see the movie, Joy. It was very good. I hope this new year will be successful for everyone! I hope to retire.
In the book, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Leigh wishes that who ever is stealing his lunch...should stop. A big wish for me would be that my family members who are not well, will get better soon.
Each year brings new changes to our school. This year we are getting three new teachers at Washington. We also are greeting a new principal, Mr. Kevin Johns. I am keeping a positive attitude that this will be a great year. Tomorrow is the first day of workshops. I know they will be great.
Oops! I haven't blogged in awhile. I was thinking of my favorite teacher. I had quite a few good ones. The one I remember the most is Mrs. Matthews, my third grade teacher. She was such a fun person. I think she is the one who made me want to be a teacher. Later in my life I met her as an adult, because she was a friend of my aunts. She was still fun to be around! I hope that I have made an impact on some of my students the way she made and impact on me!
I did not go to school at Washington, but I have been teaching here for 30 years. I will remember all my time here. This has been a great year for me! I loved the kids and the fact that I could stay at my building. If they move me this year, I will remember the 2015-2016 year as one of the best.
Today is international Earth Day! Do you recycle? Do you save energy? I think I need to do better with the recycling part.
On Friday, April 20 I watched the movie The Watsons Go To Birmingham with the intervention students. I thought the makers of the movie did a great job depicting the main points in the book. Two scenes were not in the book, but were very powerful in the movie. One scene was when the children were watching the Children's March on TV. This event did not appear in the book but it was very powerful to watch. Another scene is when the Watson children were discussing the events in Birmingham with their cousins. I grew up during those times and it reminded me when my cousins and I use to have discussions about what was going on in the news. I liked all of the actors that portrayed the roles except Byron. I think that actor looked much older than the character in the book. This is a great story. I think everyone should read the book and then see the movie.
