Be Creative
On this page you will find ways to combine poetry and art. You can find links to poetry sites on my April Activities page. (I borrowed these ideas from Sarah Small.)

1. POETRY PICTURES
Start with a basic theme: animals, love, etc. Find a poem from the poetry page. Read the poem many times. Type or write the poem and then use materials to decorate it.
2. POEMS ON FLOWERS
Give students a flower template or have them draw flowers. Start by brainstorming about flowers and spring, spring colors, types of flowers, etc. On one flower, students can write something with alliteration about spring or flowers. With the other flower write a simile about spring or about a flower in each petal. Do haiku or just a poetic phrase in the middle. Encourage the kids to take off with their own creativity. They can even write adjectives or snippets of poetry on the stems or make clouds in the sky and use alliteration, etc. The possibilities are endless!
3. POETRY COLLAGES
Research poetry forms: acrostic poem, cinquain, haiku, rhyming verse, etc. Write spring poems for each style and put the poems together on poster board. Use materials that will make your poster colorful. You can use other themes for your collage like animals, family, favorite foods, etc. (The theme for the sample poem is "candy".
4. MAKE A RAINBOW
Write a sentence for each color of the rainbow. The sentence should state something or a feeling that you think of with that color. Use markers or crayons to write your poem in the form of a rainbow. NOTE: Colors in a rainbow are in a certain order.
