Library Skills – Grade 2

September

Lessons for September will be ongoing with continuous modeling and practice

 

Review - What is the Library and what are the rules/procedures?

 

Students will tour the library and learn that the library is the place to come for books to read and to find information about things (research).  They will be introduced to rules and procedures. They will see these expectations modeled and will practice them.

 

Students will be directed on how to sit four or five students a table. Transition and modeling strategies will be used.   Students will also learn a quiet/attention strategy, raise hand to speak, hand signal for bathroom emergency. 

 

How do we care for and check out books?

 

Students review knowledge of how to handle a book properly.  Book handling will be modeled for them. Students will practice with books and book buddies.

 

Students will review use of shelf markers and check out procedures.  Students will practice these behaviors as they check out books. Flexible checkout rules will be modeled and practiced.  

 

How to Find and Checkout Library Books

Students will find their library cards on the table to make sure they have a card.  They will go to their tables leaving cards on the card table. Teachers will review what books they can checkout.  Students will choose books, get library cards, go to the checkout counter to get book and card scanned. Students will return to their tables to read or complete designated activity.

 

How to Choose a Book

Model for students how to choose a book that interests them. Use the “I Pick” Method.  Use Flip Video and the Kahoot Quiz. Students will also be introduced to The Five Finger Test.

 

Organization of the Library Part 1 - E and FIC

(multiple class sessions)

Students will review the main sections of the library and their organization.  Students will be given several challenges.  First alphabetical order review games.

Next students will be challenged to sequence a stack of books in the correct order at their table.

Students will then be provided a book and asked to place a shelf marker in the spot that would be that book's home.

Technology

Review – Taking a Quiz with iPad on Kahoot

Give each student an iPad.  Review how to turn it on, adjust volume and select an App.  Students will find the Kahoot App on their iPads.  Demonstrate how to sign in to the program and to respond to the quiz. Review behavior during the quiz.  (Remained seated at all times, no talking and use “silent cheering.)

After reviewing how to find icon for the library website students will choose hyperlinks designated by the teacher. (www.washlib2013.weeblycom)

Book Fair

Students will learn about the upcoming bookfair including rules/procedures for it.  They will also participate in activities related to the Scholastic Book Fair theme including watching the K-2 video for the fair and reading about the books that are coming on the promotional flyer.

 

Parts of a Book

Students will learn about the parts of a book.  They will watch the flip video and take the Kahoot quiz.

March

Write a Fiction Book Report.

Students we review the parts of a book. Introduce the elements of Book Report using the Google Form. Listen to books from Tumblebooks and use their library books to complete forms.

 

Students can choose activities related to St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.

 

Students can find non-fiction materials using the Dewey Decimal system.

Exploring African-American Artists
Students learn about three African Artists. The students will read/listen to biographies and complete quizzes. Students will choose one work by that artist and analyze one of their works. Students can go to NGA Art Zone to create their own works of art.

 

Students can choose activities related to Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day and/or Chinese New Year.
